The Community Education Service at Newcastle Bridges School provides teaching for pupils who are unable to attend their normal place of education due to illness. Referrals are made by hospital or community pediatricians for pupils who live in Newcastle. Our pupils come from a vast range of different schools and socio-economic backgrounds. Many pupils will have significant social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and some may be extremely physically ill. Some of the pupils referred also have significant SEND needs.
Pupils are taught from reception to Year 11. Teaching can take place in a variety of settings, from the pupil’s home to a community or school setting, as appropriate to their medical needs. Our pupils are taught by an experienced team of Community Teachers and Support Staff who, together, are skilled in teaching the full curriculum, including specialist EAL provision to non-English speaking International pupils.
Our aim is to provide a bespoke education plan which will help pupils to continue learning or re-engage with learning after a period of school absence. This will involve a period of assessment and for some pupils our work will lead to a formal assessment as part of an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP). We work very closely with home schools and multi-agencies and seek to involve our pupils and their parents/carers in each stage of their learning and transition back to their home school or alternative provision.
Pupils are offered as many sessions as they are well enough to access and hours are agreed and reviewed regularly by Newcastle Bridges School and the medical referee. Many of our pupils who do not feel able to return to their home schools progress to our specialist provision at our Benfield site, where they are able to transition into a small key stage 3 or 4 class. We also have a specialist primary provision which can provide a 12 week assessment placement of pupils with SEND needs.
